The Garth and Mavis Reimer Award

The Garth and Mavis Remier Award will support students admitted to any degree program within the Faculty of Arts for the duration of their undergraduate career. To be considered, students must have graduated from a high school located in the southeast region of Manitoba. Candidates must demonstrate financial need and preference will be given to those who are first generation in their family to attend university. A minimum 80% grade average from grade 12 courses used for admission to the UW is required to be considered. Selection is competitive and students must apply for admission to the university by March 1st to be considered. The award is renewable for a maximum of 4 years provided the recipient maintains a 3.0 GPA in full time studies and continues to present a financial need.

For both Garth and Mavis Reimer, an Arts education was the door to happy and fulfilling careers. Mavis’s degrees in English literature led directly to the path she followed to become a university teacher, researcher, and administrator. Garth’s undergraduate degree in Philosophy and Religious Studies was not as obviously relevant to his careers in law and business, but he was convinced that the ability to think critically and to understand different systems and structures of belief, learned through his Arts courses, was key to his success in the fields he chose for his work. This award was established to offer the opportunity to explore the possibilities that an education in the humanities and social sciences can open to other students from southeastern Manitoba, the region both Garth and Mavis called home.

The Reimer Award was initiated by two friends of Garth’s on the occasion of the first anniversary of his passing, R.M. Kozminski and Charles Loewen, both of whom served The University of Winnipeg for many years as members of the Board of The University of Winnipeg Foundation.
