James G. Oborne Scholarship

This Scholarship was established by The University of Winnipeg in honour of James G. Oborne’s service as independent Chair of the Pension Committee. For many years, Mr. Oborne has matched the distribution from the University of Winnipeg Foundation. It will be awarded to a student entering the Final year of a degree program in Business and Administration or Economics who has significant extra-curricular and community involvements, has completed at least 18 credit hours of Humanities courses, and who has a stated intention of pursuing a career in business. In odd years the award will be given to an Economics student. In even years the award will be given to a Business and Administration student. A graduate of McGill University, Mr. Oborne, for much of his career, worked for two national investment dealers in Montreal, Toronto and Winnipeg, was a Governor of the Winnipeg Stock Exchange and a Seatholder of the Winnipeg Commodity Exchange. He was Chairman of the Board and Investment Committee of a large Manitoba pension fund, later CEO of its investment management subsidiary, and was registered as an Investment Counsel and Portfolio Manager with the Securities Commission. He also established Manitoba’s first venture capital investment management company. Over his career he served on about 30 corporate boards, in Montreal, Toronto, Winnipeg, Calgary, Vancouver and Anchorage, Alaska, chaired several and many board committees.
