Victor Batzel Scholarship in the Humanities

This scholarship will be awarded to a student with a declared major in History, Philosophy, English, Theatre and Film, or Art History who demonstrates academic achievement and intends to continue their studies in the Humanities. The scholarship is established in memory of Professor Victor Batzel by his wife Brenda and their children. A History professor at The University of Winnipeg for 35 years, he was known for an exuberant teaching style which utilized his body as much as his voice and mind. His excellence in the classroom earned him several accolades including becoming the first winner of the Clifford J. Robson Memorial Award for Excellence in Teaching. Dr. Batzel sat on the Board of Regents for 11 years and on Senate for 26 years. He also chaired the History Department, was President of CAUT, a member of the Faculty Council of Arts and Science, and became a Fellow of The University of Winnipeg in 1999. Victor loved music and was very involved with the Virtuosi Concert Series. He also dedicated many hours to organizing youth soccer holding various prestigious administrative positions with Manitoba and Canadian Soccer Associations while serving as an otherwise unlikely coach.
