Dr. & Mrs. Roderick Hunter Scholarship
This scholarship is established in memory of Dr. R.O.A. Hunter, third Chancellor of The University of Winnipeg, and his wife, Doris Hunter. It will be awarded to a continuing, undergraduate student with high academic standing, outstanding leadership qualities, and significant extracurricular involvements on campus.
An alumnus of United College, Dr. Hunter was Senior Stick of his graduating class in 1937. He went on to study law at UManitoba and upon graduation served as a Lieutenant in the Royal Canadian Navy during WWII. After the war, he started a 25-year career with the Great-West Life Assurance Company and finished his working career at James Richardson and Sons. A great believer in supporting the community, he served as President of Ducks Unlimited in 1974 and was the second Campaign Chairman of the United Way. He served as Chair of the Board of Regents for 19 years and as Chancellor from 1978 to 1984. In 1971 UWinnipeg awarded him with an Honorary Doctorate and in 2000 he was named a Member of the Order of Canada.
Students must have completed 60 credit hours, have a minimum grade point average of 4.0 and be enrolled in full-time studies.
NOTE: This award has a two-stage selection process. The initial committee review determines which applicants will move forward to the short-listed stage of this competition. Once determined, all applicants will be notified if moving onto the second stage or not. Second stage may include interviews.
