Mark Golden Scholarship in Classics
This scholarship will be awarded to a Classics major who shows academic promise, scholarly potential, and an interest in community engagement. Candidates must have completed a minimum of 60 credit hours and be enrolled in the Honours or 4-year Major. A minimum major-GPA of 3.5 is required to be considered; the GPA requirement is competitive. Preference will be given to students enrolled in the Honours degree program and who have a strong record of on- or off-campus volunteer activity and community involvement. This scholarship commemorates Mark Golden, Emeritus Professor of Classics, who served with distinction as a member of the faculty of the Department of Classics from 1982-2015. Across his three decades of service to the University, Mark was well known as a generous colleague, distinguished scholar, and inspiring teacher. Mark’s scholarship helped to redefine our knowledge of the past, and he was a ground-breaking researcher with an international and interdisciplinary reputation in the areas of childhood and sport in Ancient Greece and Rome. Amid a slew of awards and fellowships throughout his career, he was the Honorary President of the Classical Association of Canada from 2018-2020. His contributions, however, went far beyond scholarship and the discipline of Classics, and his focus was always on others, especially students, many of whom remember him with fondness and delight decades later. Moreover, Mark was a tireless advocate for social change and action within the University, in Winnipeg and more broadly in Canada.
