Originally established in 1998 to honour Rev. Dr. Harold James King’s retirement, friends and family members created the Doreen and Harold King Bursary in Theology to celebrate his service to UWinnipeg. In 2023, prompted by a University proposal to repurpose unused Theology Funds and with a passion for helping students, his daughter Susan King, directed the funds to the University’s Opportunity Fund.

After completing his Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Theology degrees at United College in 1960, Rev. Dr. King dedicated his working career to spiritual care, counselling, and the advancement of Theology studies. From 1972 onwards, he served in a variety of roles at The University of Winnipeg, including working as a professor in Pastoral Theology and eventually appointed as Dean of the Faculty of Theology in 1986.
